Her Flyaway Manner

Most of the designs I’ve done for Her Flyaway Manner have strong photographic elements, which makes more sense knowing that I studied Photography with the guitar player at one point.

The first slide here is a 7″(45) vinyl record that uses images from a “mystery” roll of film, found in the back drawer of my desk. Overall I wanted to let the Type do the talking and use the photography as an anonymous backdrop. This is a split release between two bands (one song on each side) and I’ve always been fascinated by the ampersand and it various forms throughout typography.

The second slide shows a design for HFM’s second CD release (a 5 song EP) and  was designed using photographs taken by the guitarist Brendan McGinn on one of their many tours. Here I felt an influence of classic constructivist design from Russia and other Eastern European countries. Some of this came to me through repeat listenings to the last track of the CD “To the Last 23″ with is brilliant and eerie production—ultimately about the surviving 23 Russian seamen aboard the Kursk submarine which sank in August of 2000.
